Surrounded by tall mountains, the town is hidden between the ice cap to the west and north and huge amounts of floating icebergs in the sea to the east and south. Only 100 years ago it was unreachable for outsiders. Tasiilaq has most of what a visitor coulod expect from Greenland: Exquisite natural scenery, ice, sledge dogs and an incredibly friendly and hospitable population. As I once heard a German tourist say:“ This is the real Greenland!”. No parts of Greenland are more real than other, but Tasiilaq unquestionably lives up to the idea many of us in the West have of Greenland with its dog sledges and smiling friendly people. 3913tasiilaq I have had the good fortune of living in Tasiilaq for many years, and the aim of this book is to illustrate life as it is lived by the indigenous population and can experienced by visitors. I have deliberately played down the spectacular sunsets and the awe-inspiring mountains even they also play a role in the many-coloured palette tht constitutes any visit to Tasiilaq. My hope is, of course, that my book will inspire even greater numbers of visitors to experience this lovely corner of Greenland for themselves.
